Travel by Design…California, Sonoma County

Vintage Suitcases

Seriously…I love to combine work and play…when I’m traveling I’m always on the look out for cool salvage shops or interesting design ideas, so it is no surprise when visiting my twin sister in California for a little vacation…I squeezed in some work :)

Vintage Suitcases

These vintage suitcase were a gift from my girlfriend, Regina. I cleaned them and shipped them back to Vermont — where they are now proudly displayed. Thank you! Regina!

Fremont Diner Sonoma Californa

Seriously, my sister and I ate at the counter at the Fremont Diner in Sonoma, and that was sitting in front of me the whole time! Crazy yummy food. The place is an ICON! You must visit there when you are traveling in Wine Country.

Fremont Diner

Diner mugs… you gotta love them! This display is something I’ll keep in mind for future kitchen design ideas.

Vintage Ford Explorer Truck Yellow

Just in case, you were wondering what I want for my birthday… a vintage Ford Explorer Truck will do!

Cafe Scooteria

This is a fun stop in the town of Sonoma, California. Café Scooteria, where you can drive up and they’ll serve you coffee at your window. Or hang out at the shop — and enjoy it there. Rosanne and I road our bikes there. I mean really who could resist Italian style coffee drive-thru located at a vintage scooter mechanic’s shop? Not us!

Rosanne relaxing, while I check out all the vintage bikes…

2015-08-31 09.47.24

Now… work time… yes, you can see we take our work seriously. Rosanne (pictured here) is working on a design project for a villa in wine country so I’m helping out for a couple of days.  Rosanne was making sure, Regina Martinelli, from Martinelle Winery, measured up to helping out for the day as well. Turns out she does. :)

Giants Stadium San Francisco

I’ll admit, I haven’t been to a lot of ballgames — but really is there a pretty stadium than AT & T Park in San Francisco? WOW!

2015-08-30 19.49.32

Into the city of San Francisco we go! For a ballgame that is! We were taking our lives in our own hands wearing our St. Louis Cardinal’s gear in the Giant’s stadium. Gorgeous day! Beautiful spot.

Pladra Clothing Line USA

Shopping in San Francisco’s, after a yummy breakfast at … Pladra, a very cool custom flannel clothing line made in San Francisco, has a very cool Pop Up Shop on Hayes Street. Loved their displays. Again… great ideas for a rustic Americana entrance way look!

Bodega Bay California

Bodega Bay…early, early in the morning… surfers, fog and us. Really doesn’t get any better!

2015-08-28 15.10.41

When we were not hiking, or doing design work…we were…busy meeting people and drinking their wine — which was outstanding! Here we are having a blast at Buena Vista Winery. I felt like I was back in Italy! The nicest people there — they took such great care of us!

2015-08-28 14.41.42

LOVED the private lounge, party area upstairs at Buena Vista — someone rent that out for me for my birthday please! And the Champagne Lounge downstairs was fantastic as well.

2015-08-28 14.40.03

Rosanne and I getting a private tour — we were honored! Thanks for making us feel so special. It was a great day.

Artefact Design & Salvage

Rosanne and I shopping at Artefact Design &Salvage in Sonoma…Love their displays and vintage finds… amazing shop for anyone who wants to add something special to their home design.

2015-08-26 15.30.12

And Rosanne says I’m the one with the bad sense of direction… Lost again, on the trails through Sonoma… Here is Rosanne showing me the way out.

2015-08-27 10.28.36

Once again, hiking in Sonoma, who would have thought an amazing Redwood forest in the middle of wine country

2015-08-27 13.31.04

Visiting Martinelli Vineyards…the back side of the vines…gorgeous day! If you have not tried their wines — I insist you run out and get a bottle — my fav — the Pinot Noir.

2015-08-27 10.28.36

Here is Rosanne again…this time we stuck to the trail at Bartholomew Winery Park. LOVED the Redwood forest in the middle of the hike. It was a great trail system.

2015-08-27 13.32.57

Here I am, helping Rosanne out with her design project. Don’t worry when she comes to see me, she helps me with all my projects as well.

2015-08-27 16.42.22

Seriously, I should have picked this up. $20 at Republic of Thrift (benefiting the public schools), a second hand shop in Sonoma. It would have looked so cool framed in a huge frame hung in a living room — Adobe style house… Love all the second hand shops out West!

2015-08-27 17.13.57

Being from Vermont — I’m sure you can understand how much I appreciate an amazing Mexican food meal. Here is a hidden gem in Sonoma…El Molino.  The before picture…

2015-08-27 17.22.15

After…

2015-08-27 09.41.06

A house for sale in Sonoma comes will all the parts and pieces you could ever want… LOVED this place. Housing hunting with my sister…

2015-08-26 13.38.34

The backyard at Artefact Design & Salvage. LOVE the extra large blue industrial pot…looks like an old smeltering pot turned into a garden container. I can see it in a very large sunroom with a huge orange tree growing out of it. The fair wheel is fun too!

2015-08-26 12.41.35-2

Rosanne’s friend… has the original…salt and pepper in old toy trucks… or at least that is where she got the idea, and I got the idea from her… and other’s got the idea from me… and so on and so on…

Sand Dollars at Bodega Bay

How happy am I? Craft coming right up!

2015-09-14 07.12.33

A DIY Craft I made from my memories of my trip… sand dollars from Bodega Bay. Lots and lots of fun!

I didn’t get here but I will next time! Sonoma Nesting Company and many other interesting places to visit… I’ll be back!

Ohhhh…the places we go… shopping for salvage, vintage and recycled goods…

My daughter, Gabrielle, and I, set up a booth at the Vintage Bazaar. What a great experience. Gabrielle learned so much about making things (like these signs), selling them, and loading and unloading cars. She meet so many people and had an amazing time. It was a special mother and daughter trip!

Another great and crazy couple of months, but I can’t help but be awed, inspired and renewed by some of the most amazing folks, I’ve meet along the way. I’ve been to quite a few vintage bazaars, country markets, and antique fairs to see that those who have booths (the sellers) are truly passionate about their design, products and lifestyle. Please give a round of applause to some of the hardest working folks I know and enjoy pictures of all their amazing finds, creations and wares…I hope you get a chance to visit the booths one day!  Here are a few from the Vintage Bazaar and the Country Living Fair. (click on the pictures to see these folks websites…)

I have a new found respect for those folks who set up booths at outdoor events. It is a lot of work and lots and lots of lifting!

Cari Cucksey, is not only supremely talented, but her new paint line is outstanding... She travels to a few hand-picked shows and gives amazing demonstrations. She has become a good friend...another reason to visit these shows often -- you really get to know some great folks!

Karen and Patrick of South Porch Antiques are truly the best of the vintage fair lifestyle is all about. They travel from show to show, with their daughter, and truly show us how to be kind, caring and talented all at the same time. I bought that tumbleweed in Nashville and they brought it all the way to New York for me! Thank you guys!

Not only do they have cool things to sell, but the displays in these booths are very unique. Stashstyle created these fun pom poms!

Then there are the incrediable artisans... Karyn Shonk, owner and designer, or Karynshonk Designs. Vintage and recycled and found objects turned into one of a kind jewelry pieces.

Then there are the nice ladies form Cutlery Couture...their booth was packed all weekend at the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck. Bumped into them at breakfast at the inn and we sat together and chatted up a storm. That's the kinda folks you meet at these events.

Then there was dinner with these 2 (actually 3) chixs and a barn. Seriously... they could have a stand up comedy show besides selling unique vintage pieces at shows and in their barn.

Of course, there are a ton of people to meet... but I did also spend some time shopping :)

Shopping at Barge Canal Market, One Stop on Your Pine Street Tour

The Barge Canal Market is located on one of my favorite streets in Burlington, Vermont–Pine Street. Filled with antique shops, second hand shops, recycle centers and more — include New World Tortilla — yummy, this street (and the ones around it) are brimming with finds. The Barge Canal Market on Pine Street is now owned by Jeremy and his wife Adele (yes — now everyone can pronounce her name). They have totally cleaned it up and organized the space and brought in some cool stuff. I love the retro and vintage finds, including the clothing section and the mismatched metal chairs — there is something for everyone in there. So check it out and say hi to them for me.  Hard working couple — very nice!

Here is a list of the places I check out on and around Pine Street–you can make a day of it!

The Barge Canal Market
Vintage Inspired Antiques
Rebuild Center
Restore Center
Conant Metal and Light
The Lamp Shop
Battery Street Jeans (second hand shop)
The second hand shop at the Church (Tuesdays and Thursdays and some Saturdays)
Lake Champlain Chocolates (seconds :))
New World Tortilla
Burlington Furniture Company
Great Harvest Bread (get your free slice)
and a few other hot spots!

Have fun–let me know if you find anything cool.
My Best, Joanne

Check out the improved Barge Canal Market on Pine Street, Burlington, Vermont.

Don’t you love the new look.  You can walk around.  Books, frames, retro dining sets, club chairs, dishes…

I love chairs. The metal ones on the floor and the ones up top — the white mod looking ones — how cool would they be with a rustic wood table!

I love vintage clothing — I could go crazy here — are those cowboy boots in the background? Missed that!

I SPY…Virtual Shopping for Recycled and Vintage Goods

I spend a lot of time checking out my local salvage and second hand shops, and when I’m traveling, I find more, but when I can’t get out of the house, I’m sure to see what is out there via the Internet. I love playing the I SPY game looking for cool things.  Here are a few of my wish list items…just in case you are wondering :)  The web is truly a cornucopia  of recycled and salvaged products waiting to be discovered–so have fun and search away.
My Best, Joanne

I know I can’t drag this home from London but I have always been in love with vintage Chesterfield Sofas. Don’t ask me why — maybe an old movie I saw in my youth?  Ebay is a great place to browse for vintage goods around the world.

I’ve always wanted to do something with recycled steel drums. Looks like Sundance bet me to it. Which is okay because Robert Redford is amazing (and really adorable). Love this decorative bowl made from a steel drum with all the words left right on it!

Anthropologie really knows how to style and create products– including this chandelier made from recycled Encyclopedia pages. I knew those books would come in useful somehow!

Okay, this is how I feel most of the time in my house. Really! Am I the only one who sees the dishes in the sink? This vintage 1950’s sign at Rejuvenation should be hanging in my kitchen!

Vintage Fabric on Paper Hill Fabrics on Etsy.  I can see how a vintage textile addiction can be formed. Love it. Hope I can use it in a project very soon :) Etsy, another one of my favorite places to see what people are creating and finding. Really talented artists as well as cool vintage and recycled finds.

Love these storage jars made from recycled glass.  West Elm has some very cool recycled stuff. Just type in recycled or reclaimed in the search box on their site and you see what they have! As soon as I redo my pantry, these babies will be lining the shelves!
